My dog has a big red lump on its "backside" does anyone no what this could be from or if it is serious

It is probably an abscess as big_bad said. However, if you take him to the vet it is fairly cheap to have them "squeezed". They will get all the yuck out of there and make sure it is cleaned up properly so it should not get infected.
