How to break 16 month old from pacifier?

My 16, almost 17 month old only gets his pacifier at nap and bedtime. The problem is when he is sleeping, he somehow manages to bite his pacifier and has recently been putting holes though them!! He will only use one kind of pacifier (avent). I am afraid that a piece will come off and he will choke so we tried completely taking them away cold turkey. He wont sleep or nap he just screams and makes himself get sick for hours! I bought more pacifiers to just make new ones every time he bites though one but I still just want to get him off of them all together. Also, he is to young to understand the concept of the binki fairy or any of that. That would work great if he was 2 or so but he does not understand it now. :( Please help!
